How it works

  1. Each cost is split equally between the people ticked under it. If it doesn’t divide exactly, the leftover cents go one each to the first people, so every cost adds up.
  2. Each person’s balance is what they paid minus their share of everything.
  3. To settle up, whoever owes the most pays whoever is owed the most, as much as one of them needs, and that repeats until everyone is at zero. That keeps the number of transfers small: never more than one fewer than the number of people.

Example

Ana, Ben, Chen and Dev spend a long weekend away. Ana pays $840 for the apartment, Ben $460 for the car and fuel, Chen $96 for groceries and $135 for kayaking (which Dev skipped), and Dev $180 for the last dinner. Ana is owed $401 and Ben $21; Chen owes $208 and Dev $214. Three transfers settle it: Dev pays Ana $214, Chen pays Ana $187, and Chen pays Ben $21. The guide to settling up after a trip walks through it.

Common questions

How does the trip expense splitter work out who owes whom?

For each person it adds up what they paid and their share of every cost they were part of. The difference is their balance. Then whoever owes the most pays whoever is owed the most, and so on, until everyone is at zero.

Can some costs be split between only some people?

Yes. Under each cost, untick anyone it wasn’t for. A kayak trip three of four people took splits three ways; everything else can still split four ways.

What about costs in different currencies?

Split each currency separately, or agree one exchange rate for the whole trip and convert before you add the costs. Mixing rates from different days makes the totals impossible to check.

Is anything I type saved or sent anywhere?

No. Everything is worked out in your browser and disappears when you close the page.
