Split bill calculator with tip
Enter the bill, the tip and how many of you there are. Each share is worked out to the cent, so the shares always add up to the total.
How it works
The tip is the bill times the tip percentage, rounded to the cent. The total is shared equally; when it doesn’t divide exactly, the leftover cents go one each to the first people, so nobody pays more than a cent extra and nothing is lost to rounding.
Example
Dinner for three comes to $186.40. A 15% tip is $27.96, making $214.36. Split three ways, that’s $71.45 each, with one person paying $71.46.
Splitting with the same friends often? In ClearOwe, you can split a bill equally or with custom shares, and each share lands on that person’s balance.
Common questions
How do you split a bill with a tip?
Add the tip to the bill first, then divide the total by the number of people. A $186.40 bill with a 15% tip is $214.36, or $71.45 each for three people, with one person paying a cent more.
Why does one person pay a cent more?
Some totals don’t divide evenly. $214.36 split three ways is $71.4533…, so two people pay $71.45 and one pays $71.46. That way the shares add up to exactly the bill.
Should the tip be on the amount before or after tax?
Customs vary. Tipping on the amount before tax is common in the United States; in many countries service is included and no tip is expected. Set the tip to 0 if it’s already on the bill.
What if people ordered very different amounts?
Split it by what each person had instead: add up each person’s items, then share the tax and tip in proportion. For costs over a whole trip, use the trip expense splitter.
